Lakeview Cabin Collection is a puzzle horror video game developed and published by Roope Tamminen. It is an episodic comedy game inspired by various.

Lakeview Cabin III

Babyface

The first killer that is encountered in III. He emerges from the lake and attacks on the second night, unless you ring the bell on subsequent playthroughs.

  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: Nobody is safe from this guy, including the pet dog. After murdering the dog, Babyface will wear the mutilated carcass on his head like a hat.
  • Ax-Crazy: He is a violent and unstable murderer whose sole ambition is to kill the new counselors at Camp Lakeview. Indeed, he usually wields an ax which he finds on the west pier, unless it is moved before he arrives.
  • Even Bad People Love Their Parents: Babyface will murder anyone in his path - aside from his dad.
  • Improbable Weapon User: His weapon of choice, should he get his hands on it? A teddy bear. He will ditch whatever weapon he had for it as well, and giving it to him leaves him open for a moment.
  • Mighty Glacier: By far the slowest killer, able to be outrun even when dashing, but takes far more punishment to kill than anyone else. It is for this reason that most methods of killing him revolve around plenty of fire, explosions, and falling objects.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Dresses up like a baby, wears a mask that resembles a baby's face (hence the name). He also cries like a baby, although from him this comes out as terrifyingly disturbing.
  • The Family That Slays Together: He, his father, and his mother are the main antagonists of III.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Getting blown up twice and having a huge, heavy crate dropped on him does a LOT to help with killing him, shaving off huge chunks of his health(though unfortunately not actually finishing the job).

Red (The Husband)

Originally the protagonist of the first game, he reappears in III as one of the antagonists, although he only joins the attack when his son Babyface is attacked twice.

  • Ax-Crazy: Not to the literal extent of his son, who very often will start with an ax if you don't get rid of it first, but he is the fastest of the three killers in III, meaning running away in a straight line will not work, and he is bound and determined to kill you.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: If you kill his son in III, do NOT let him see his corpse. Otherwise, he'll gain a huge speed buff, making avoiding him much harder.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Red goes from being the main protagonist in the original Lakeview Cabin game and defeating his undead wife and her unborn monster foetus, to becoming an antagonist in III who helps his offspring murder innocent people.
    • That being said, there are hints that he was evil all along, even in the first game.
  • Glass Cannon: Significantly easier to kill health-wise than the Baby(one shot from the shotgun will kill him instantly), but much faster and deadlier as a result.
  • Improvised Weapon: Not to the same extent as the player character, but if it counts as a weapon he can use it(though he starts with a machete).
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: His reaction in III to his son's death is this.
  • Rogue Protagonist: As mentioned above, he has gone from main character to secondary villain.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: The best way to deal with him. A single shell is enough to put him down.
  • Taking You with Me: One method of killing him? Drive a motorbike directly into him; the explosion will kill both him and the rider.
  • The Family That Slays Together: He, his wife and his son are the main antagonists of III.
  • Unholy Matrimony: Red and his inhumanly sinister wife aid their son in trying to murder the camp counselors.

Eleanor (The Wife)

See her character entry in the Lakeview Cabin VI folder. The following tropes apply to LAKESIDE CABIN 3 ONLY.

  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She can be instantly defeated with one of these. The catch is, you MUST do an obtuse puzzle in Lakeside Cabin 5 involving the underworld in order for the box to appear, so it WON'T be an easy-win option the first time around.

Mutilated Woman

A screaming, mutilated woman who runs across the screen and falls to her death in a covered up pit. Implied to have been a (short-lived) escapee from the family.

  • Foreshadowing: Her injuries are quite vivid and look like bite marks and slashes, indicating something tried to eat her.
  • Killed Off for Real: At the very start of the game. She is only seen alive for a few moments.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She is never referenced or brought up again after her appearance at the beginning, unless you find her corpse.

Hillbilly Cannibals

A family of cannibalistic rednecks who reside in the mansion next to the gas station. They serve as antagonists in IV.

  • Depraved Homosexual: The bondage couple in the room full of chickens, if the person in the gimp suit is indeed another man.
  • Evil Old Folks: Several of them are elderly people, although they are just as hostile and depraved as the others.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: The two girls in the bathroom and the old man in the room with the 'statues' are all fully naked, and will still attack whoever crosses them.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Obviously.
  • Villainous Incest: If they are all truly related. Two of them are engaged in coitus, with the bearded man being screwed by someone wearing a gimp suit.

Pregnant Woman

Ati radeon hd 4870 graphics upgrade kit for apple mac pro. As the name suggests, she is a pregnant woman found in the mansion's basement.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Her backstory is unknown, so whether she is a member of the hillbilly family or if she is just another unlucky captive is a mystery.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: She is in an incredibly dangerous situation, being in a house full of cannibal hillbillies and giant man-eating rats. Just because she isn't a playable character doesn't mean she cannot be killed and, if she is, the results are disturbing.
  • Pregnant Hostage: It is entirely possible that she has been kidnapped by the hillbillies. She can be rescued from the mansion, and escapes with the survivors in the van after the jerry cans of fuel are all found.
  • Skeleton Key: Drops one of these after being rescued from the house.
  • Womb Horror: Upon being killed, a hideous rat-like offspring bursts from her corpse, suggesting that the woman was impregnated by one of the giant rats that reside in the mansion.

Lakeview Cabin V

Happy Dad Killer

The antagonist of V, who wears a Happy Dad mask and has supernatural powers.

  • Ax-Crazy: Well, Knife Crazy more like. Regardless, he loves to stab people.
  • Expy: Of Michael Myers.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He appears briefly as a child in one of the endings of III in the family portrait.
  • Facial Horror: Initially, his appearance without the mask is relatively normal. However, after losing his mask and being attacked more than once, half of his face will be hideously burned.
  • Freudian Excuse: His supposed reason for going on a murderous rampage? Losing at a video game. Though, it's implied he was never exactly stable to begin with, so it's likely less of a cause and more of an excuse.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being attacked three times by more powerful entities, he reverts to his completely vulnerable child form and, if the player chooses, will be reunited with his mother.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Getting someone killed by him is crucial to summoning the demon, which is what begins his inevitable downfall.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: He has a tendency to just randomly appear. When he is wounded, however, he visibly disappears in a cloud of black smoke.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: When shown as a child, he is just another happy young boy who just wants to be with his mom.

Policeman

This cop shows up outside the pink house after someone calls 9-1-1 on the telephone.

  • Accidental Murder: Despite having good intentions, the policeman ends up killing an innocent.
  • Cool Shades: Although these come off after he realizes that he's shot an innocent person by mistake.
  • Do Not Drop Your Weapon: Averted. After shooting someone by accident, the policeman goes into a state of shock and drops his gun. Later, if the killer shows up outside the house, the cop will be defenseless if the killer attacks him.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: He is called to deal with the masked killer, but ends up being startled and accidentally fatally shooting one of the teenagers. This causes him great distress, which is evident in his facial expression.
  • Police are Useless: He does nothing upon arrival, except for shooting the first person to approach him.
  • Sunglasses at Night: The game takes place at night.

The Demon

An eerie, tall and thin being that serves as the keeper of the Underside, and sometimes provides a mild Jump Scare.

  • Badass Longcoat: Has a VERY long robe, and is one of the few people capable of inflicting real, tangible damage upon the killer.
  • Badass Preacher: He at least looks the part of a demonic preacher, and is one of the only people who can harm the killer.
  • Creepy Good: Even though he's a demon, is summoned through a ritual involving at least four deaths, and has a face that has a very explicit Satanic symbol on it, he's an ally and never attempts to harm you. In fact, his summoning is crucial to defeating the Big Bad.
  • Noble Demon: Absolutly. lLeaving aside that he completely ignores everyone except for the serial killer running around, There's a room in the underworld where the ancestor to said serial killer's family is currently being punished to prove the demon DOES NOT mess around. It's also possible to free the ancestor from his torment, BUT ONLY WHEN you have someone positioned by that door in the underworld while the Demon is busy attacking the killer, and there's also a small box in this room which is important to getting Ending A
  • Shock and Awe: Has lightning powers, as shown when he zaps the killer.
  • Undeathly Pallor: Has pale skin with a light blueish tint.

The Smiling Killer

Long after his death, this man leaves traces behind. Bringing him back is a crucial part of defeating the Happy Dad killer.

  • Creepy Doll: After the doll's head is reattached to its body in the attic, the smiling killer will possess the doll and teleport it to the bedroom of the pink house. The killer's spirit can only be awakened within the doll if it witnesses the twins committing incest.
  • Evil vs. Evil: This man, who was a child murderer in life, is summoned back from death in order to help defeat another killer who is going after teenagers.
  • Villainous Incest: According to the newspaper clipping, he was caught in coitus with his sister.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He was once a notorious childkiller and, when attacking the Happy Dad killer, the latter briefly returns to his tormented child form while being hurt.

The Witch/Saint Mother

This enigmatic hooded figure appears in the Game Within a GameLacus Lamia, although she can be summoned to take care of the killer.

  • All There in the Manual: The manual for Lacus Lamia explains all of her backstory and origins. It turns out that she was a young maid who sacrificed her two brothers so that the Lake Gods would grant her with a title and powers.
  • Burn the Witch!: Inverted. She is a witch who burns two men at the stake as part of a ritual.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain, to her two brothers.
  • Dynamic Entry: When you summon her in the game, she rises up from the altar with a three pronged red eye in the background.
  • Gratuitous Latin: The name 'Lacus Lamia' means 'lake witch'.
  • In the Hood: She wears a red hooded cloak that hides her features.
  • Would Hurt a Child: And does so, drowning a baby in the lake as a sacrifice to her gods.
    • This comes up again when the teenagers need to give a baby to the Witch to secure her help against the Happy Dad killer. What she does with this baby is unclear, although it looks as though she consumed its life-force.

Offspring

The alien infection spreading through the spaceship VI takes place on.

  • The Corruption: An infectious mutative virus that transforms people into horrible monsters of varying sizes.
  • Expy: Of the Thing, with a bit of Xenomorph.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Any non-playable character could be infected when you start the game, and missing them has drastic consequences.

Eleanor (The Wife)

The antagonist of Lakeview Cabin, and the Final Boss of Lakeview Cabin III. And appears as the base form of the alien mother in VI. She appears on the second night in the first game, and appears after all of the other killers are dead in III. And after all the aliens are dead in VI.

  • Expy: She's the creature from The Thing (1982) mixed with the Alien Queen.
  • Final Boss: In I, III, and VI as the Alien Mother.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Considering she has the most physical appearances of the entire cast, it's possible.
  • Humanoid Abomination: In Lakeview Cabin, as well as Lakeview Cabin III and VI. She hounds you all throughout the first game in a very decrepit and monstrous form, and if you approach her from the front in III, well, you get to see it again. Except it's even worse this time. Then, in Lakeview Cabin VI, it gets far, far worse.
  • Made of Iron: She can take two grenades and a rocket directly to her body before dying.
  • One-Hit Kill: You get this if you try to attack her from the front in III, as well as a Downer Ending.
  • One-Winged Angel: In VI, she transforms into a hideously monstrous form.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: In III, her true form, while only visible for a split second, has these. She also has them in VI, right before her transformation.
  • The Family That Slays Together: She, her husband, and her son are the main antagonists of III. She appears on her own in VI as the Alien Mother.
  • Total Party Kill: The end fate of everyone if she isn't handled properly.
  • One-Woman Wail: Sings when she first appears in III. Don't take the bait.

The CEO

He is the mysterious owner of the space station.

  • Affably Evil: Arrives at the refugee center at the end of the game to greet and congratulate the survivors who escaped the space station. He is also Red's descendant and presumably part of the alien outbreak.
    • Faux Affably Evil: However, if fewer than fifteen people are saved, he becomes angry and kills them all.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He is the CEO of the space station, and is definitely involved in something sinister, using the cursed lake's power and permitting unusual experiments.
  • It Runs in the Family: Is related to Red somehow and seems to be just as dodgy.
  • Patient Zero: One of the soldiers or scientists are initially seen as this, although the syringe gun in his office is red, suggesting that he may have been the first to carry the alien infection.

The Sewer Dweller

A monster that lurks beneath the cinema hub level in the sewers. He generally just stays there, but if you confront him and die, it goes on a murderous rampage.

  • Achilles' Heel: Acid, which severely weakens him.. though he gets significantly quicker.
  • Animalistic Abomination: Cover him in acid and he goes from being sort of human, if decrepit and rotted, to a Rake-like monstrosity that will show no mercy whatsoever.
  • Bonus Boss: He isn't required in any way to beat the game, but if you're curious about what's in the sewers..
  • Driven to Suicide: Not him, but someone who found out about him. 'The sewers SCREAM at me'
  • Flayed Alive: Implied to be the fate of his direct victims, whose corpses hang upside-down in the sewers.
  • Fragile Speedster: If you drop acid on him in the sewers, he becomes this, able to be downed with a single shotgun shell but much, much faster.
  • Humanoid Abomination: In his first form at least. Something about him just.. doesn't seem right.
  • Mighty Glacier: Moves very slow, but he doesn't exactly need to do otherwise. Not a whole lot of places to run in a movie theater. Until you drop acid on him.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: You'll need the one that the bum has to kill him, as there's nothing else that can make him flinch.

Santa

The main antagonist of the minigame Last Christmas. Dressed up as his namesake, he and his pair of 'reindeers' are responsible for a number of infant kidnappings.

  • Bad Santa: Well yeah. As stated above, he is dressed up in the iconic red and white suit. He also wields a knife and will kill anyone in his way in order to steal their children.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Not him personally, but his creepy reindeer people attack without clothes.
  • Knife Nut: He wields a knife when breaking into houses.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has a pair of bright red eyes to match his suit.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Has been abducting babies and wants to abduct the protagonist's too. It isn't exactly clear what he does with them but if he or the reindeers take away the protagonist's baby, we are told that the baby is dead.

Wife (Last Christmas)

She is married to the protagonist - or at least she was until her death.

  • Driven to Suicide: After being unable to 'get it to stop', she goes into the shed and blows her brains out with a shotgun.
  • Palette Swap: Her outfit is identical to the ginger girl in III, but she has blonde hair and, well, her face is pretty unrecognizable, considering.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: She certainly seemed to think so, as an effective method of suicide.
  • Take Care of the Kids: In her suicide note, she tells the protagonist to love their daughter for the both of them.

Lakeview Cabin Collection is a survival horrorvideo game developed and published by Roope Tamminen. It is the sequel to his free flash game Lakeview Cabin, which released on 21 October, 2013.[1] In 2014, Tamminen announced that he was seeking to have the game released through Steam Greenlight and on 25 March, 2015, Tamminen released the Lakeview Cabin Collection to Steam, Humble Bundle, and itch.io.[2]

Premise[edit]

The game's initial setting is a hub level set in a New York City movie theater, with a monstrous killer lurking in the sewers beneath a cinema. This level was formerly going to be Lakeview Cabin VI: Manhattan Lake Massacre, but Roope found it too small for a full length film and instead chose to turn it into the hub level and let Lakeview Cabin VI take its place from the seventh entry. Within the cinema, there are five 'movies' that are playable games set elsewhere. Each film is centered on a different plot and a new set of playable protagonists, though the storylines are all connected and the movies take place in the same universe. The game references and borrows elements from classic horror movies such as Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Alien, and The Thing.

  • Lakeview Cabin III — Set around a decade after the original Lakeview Cabin flash game, a new group of counselors for Camp Lakeview unwittingly encounter a mysterious killer known as Babyface. Described as a 'sandbox boss-fight'. This game takes place at an idyllic-looking cabin surrounded by woods and a large lake. Players are able to control several characters and have them interact with their surroundings. Characters can swim, drink, handle objects, and have intercourse with one another, however during the night the characters are hunted and are able to be killed by their pursuer. Players can also kill the characters off themselves via several different methods.
  • Lakeview Cabin IV: Curse of the Lake — After a rising girl band finds their tour bus out of gas, they must fight through a family of inbred cannibals, a swarm of mutant rats, and a vast array of traps hidden within Lakeview Manor. Described as a 'randomized action survival'.
  • Lakeview Cabin V: Homecoming — On Halloween night, a small suburban neighborhood finds itself terrorized by an unkillable evil, and must resort to supernatural means to defeat it. Described as a 'supernatural mystery'.
  • Lakeview Cabin VI — In a space station collecting remains of the original cabin, a handful of janitors find themselves face to face with multiplying alien creatures who can travel through the station's built-in delivery system.
  • Epilogue (also called Lakeview Cabin II) — This game is far simpler than the ones mentioned above, and is unlocked when the previous four are completely finished. The epilogue's plot is vague, though it has been interpreted as the details of the events that took place that inspired the movies.

When each of the Lakeview Cabin movies are finished, there are minigames that can be played as well. The minigames alongside Lakeview Cabin III, IV, V, and VI are, respectively, Lake of the Dead, Treasure of the Vampire Rednecks, Super Dad, and Space Psychos. Additionally, in 2017, another minigame (unconnected to any of the other games) called Last Christmas became available. The playable protagonist is a father who must protect his child from Christmas-themed killers.

Development[edit]

Tamminen initially began developing the game as a small prototype with similar mechanics as the 8-bitNintendo game Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers and chose to turn it into a survival horror game.[3] Prior to further developing the first game Tamminen sought his wife's approval to make a horror game, as she was pregnant at this time and the first game's antagonists were a pregnant woman and her unborn fetus.[3] While the first game had more of a cartoon-esque look, Tamminen decided to make the further episodes in 8-bit style, as he felt that this made it easier for him as a solo developer.[3]

Tamminen has stated that the game's puzzles 'came almost naturally' as he 'just added items that you might usually find at a cabin, and then tried to think of at least three ways to use them. The obvious use, the 'self-harm' use and the use as a weapon.'[4]

Reception[edit]

Critical reception of Lakeview Cabin Collection has been predominantly positive.[5][6] Much of the game's praise centered upon its humor, sandbox game play, and easter eggs,[7] while criticism centered upon the game's direction, mechanics, and lack of a tutorial.[8]
