LADIES' MAN: Callaway Golf is offering women golfers something they have never seen before. The company has introduced an innovative set of golf clubs specifically designed to make the game more fun for the better half. We think the Game Enjoyment System is a unique solution to a very common problem many golfers find the game of golf too hard, said Ron Drapeau, Chairman and CEO of Callaway Golf This is especially true for beginners or those who don't have the opportunity to play very often. The Game Enjoyment System is an excellent way to simplify the game and make it more enjoyable through innovative design.

Callaway's new Game Enjoyment System consists of seven uniquely designed golf clubs, a stand bag, headcovers and a guidebook that explains the set and provides yardage and usage guidelines for each club. The Game Enjoyment System, the first Callaway Golf product line specifically designed for women, is expected to ship to retail accounts in March.

Each club in the Game Enjoyment System was designed with function placed before form, Callaway stated. The woods offer a unique design, which have offset hosels and an open-top construction. This design lowers the center of gravity, according to Callaway, to help golfers with slower swing speeds get shots airborne more easily, while helping to square the clubhead at impact for better results. The three woods in the Game Enjoyment System are the Driver (up to 190 yards), Long Fairway Wood (up to 175 yards) and Short Fairway Wood (up to 150 yards).

The irons in the Game Enjoyment System continue on the theme of function over form as they feature a large, square face area that promises to inspire confidence and helps golfers line up their shots more accurately. This unique design also includes a large, radiused sole to help the club glide through turf and sand without digging. Another advantage of the bottom-heavy design is a low center of gravity, Callaway said. The three irons included in the Game Enjoyment System are the Long Iron (up to 140 yards), Mid Iron (up to 115 yards) and Short Iron (50 yards and in). Each iron and wood in the Game Enjoyment Set has a lightweight GES graphite shaft designed specifically for the Game Enjoyment System.

WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THIS: For today's modern golfer, the dual strap has woven itself into nearly every golfer's bag. The benefit of the system is evident by taking pressure off one shoulder and evenly distributing it between two. However, that is about to change with Ogio Sport's introduction of the Shling, a strap system, Company President, Mike Pratt said eliminates the fumbling around and uncomfortable feeling of the two-strap system on golf bags. Ever since I've been in golf I've struggled with two straps,' Pratt said. I know a lot of golfers who have two straps but only use one because they don't want to climb into the second one.'

With (the Shling system) you don't lean at all. We've had a lot of local golfers test the Shling system and we keep hearing from them that they've had less fatigue. We're happy to hear that because less fatigue means this strap might actually be a performance feature.'

The Shling system will be available on Ogio's new Trick carry bag, Pratt said, and also can be installed on other Ogio bags for around $20 more than the original price. If your wondering whether the company will sell the Shling as a stand alone accessory, would you if your were in Pratt's position? We'd rather have consumers buy an Ogio product,' Pratt said. We've spent a lot of time in lab on this and we want to benefit from it.'

Golf appears to be the first application for the Shling but Pratt believes its only the beginning. He already has plans to put the Shling system on other Ogio products such as briefcases and team bags. I've traveled to Europe and Asia with one on my briefcase,' Pratt said. I'll never go back to a single strap.'

LOOKING TO BE A FACTOR: Much like the Ever Ready Bunny that keeps on going and going, Tommy Armour Golf's 845 iron line is one of the most enduring in the past 15 years. Fred Couples and Mark Calcavecchia have entrusted part of their pay checks in the past to the Armour irons, and last year Craig Stadler managed a feat not likely to be duplicated anytime soon. He won using the irons on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. The company announced at the Orange County Convention Center the introduction of the Tommy Armour 845cs SilverBack irons.

Based on the Maltby Playability Factor (MPF), the company said 845cs Silverback irons fit into the 'Super Game Improvement' category, which the company said appeals to golfers at all skill levels. The MPF is a formula that scientifically computes an index of club head playability, and is backed by more than 30 years of Ralph Maltby's club design work, Gutelius said. Maltby, who founded the Golfworks in Newark, Ohio, is one of the industry's more highly-regarded club designers.

'This is basically a cast version of our 845c forgings,' said John Gutelius, Vice President of Marketing for Tommy Armour Golf. 'It fits into a different price point (suggested retail price $399) than the forgings (SRP $599) and gives players the great look of a blade. I think it appeals to golfers who have followed Tommy Armour and expect that kind of look from us,'

The cavity back blade, according to Gutelius, ensures more perimeter weighting with greater blade length, while maintaining the traditional look of a cast iron. Also, Gutelius said, the 845cs provides added stability, while maintaining pro line workability with the short irons.

In addition to the 845cs irons, Armour also is introducing 400cc 845 Forged Persimmon Driver, together with a matching set of 845 Metal Persimmon Fairway Woods. 'The 845 Forged Persimmon Driver (last year's model) has been a tremendous success among our core dedicated 845 iron players,' said Gutelius. 'As a result, the 400cc driver, as well as a full array of fairway woods, was the next logical step in taking the 845 franchise.'

The 400cc 845 Forged Persimmon Beta Ti driver combines the classic look of a traditional persimmon head, Gutelius said, with the latest performance technology than includes high density internal weighting that relocates the center of gravity to the back of the club, thus enhancing overall trajectory.

The driver is available in a men's right-handed model with 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees of loft, as well as a left-handed model with 9.5 and 10.5 degrees of lofts. Suggested retail price is $249.99 each. The 845 Metal Persimmon Fairway Woods carry a suggested retail price of $129.99 each.

ROUNDING OUT THE PORTFOLIO: Count the Top-Flite Golf Company in the metal woods market as it announced Top-Flite Tour Titanium Driver and Top-Flite Tour 3 & 5 woods. They will be sold individually, as a set of woods, and also packaged as a full 3 x 8 set. Constructed of quality stainless steel, the suggested retail for the set of driver, 3, and 5 woods is $249. The new Top-Flite Tour 3 x 8 Package includes the new Top-Flite Tour Titanium Driver, the new Top-Flite Tour 3 & 5 woods and the Top-Flite Tour Irons, made of 100 percent Titan Steel. Packaged as a full set, the suggested retail price is $499. Club for club, what Top-Flite is offering is the greatest value in the premium club category, added Tursi.

Accepted indeed and while some in golf may not feel comfortable wearing a mock to play in, it has become fashionable off the course especially with a jacket.

It features a dual face radius, one that is flatter across the surface area, according to the company, for improved gear effect and straighter drives. The real breakthrough, according to Precept, comes in a specifically engineered elastomer compound insert in each iron, offering a super soft feel for improved feedback and confidence. Material was removed from the inner cavity and replaced with a light elastomer compound to absorb vibration. The tungsten weight then serves a dual purpose of improving spin and launch conditions and stabilizing the overall weight of the club.

The Precept Tour Premium EC603 irons have a suggested retail price of $536/per set of 8 irons (3-PW) and the EC603 Pro Spec irons are being offered at a suggested retail price of $600/per set of 8 irons (3-PW). The EC603 set features a Nippon NS Pro 950GH shaft, an ultra lightweight steel shaft, while the EC 603 Pro Spec irons are available exclusively with True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts (R300, S300 and X100). Custom loft, lie and length adjustments are also available. Custom shaft options are available.

STILL CRAZY AGTER ALL THESE YEARS: Dunlop Golf could be accused of going crazy. The company announced the new LoCo Pro, at the 2004 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL. It features a 450cc forged Beta-Titanium head with the original LoCo's distinct midnight blue and electric yellow colors.

'The original LoCo driver was a hugely successful endeavor that no one could have predicted the magnitude of,' said Rick Gray, Director of Product Development, Focus Golf Systems, Inc. 'However, as great as the original LoCo was, there still was room for some improvements. That is why we created the LoCo Pro. It is designed to answer the call we received for more distance. The challenge though, was adding distance without sacrificing the easy playability that the original LoCo became known for, and we have done that.'

The company said it was able to create an enlarged sweetspot in the LoCo Pro, designed for ultimate driving distance and accuracy. The 100 percent titanium head offers increased distance, but also enhanced resiliency, making the club more durable for extended play, the company added.

The LoCo Pro, which will be played on the 2004 PGA Tour by John Daly, comes standard with a proprietary Harrison XL graphite shaft. The LoCo Pro is offered with a 10 degree loft and will be available in men's right and left handed models beginning March 1st, 2004 through sporting goods and golf specialty stores nationwide. The LoCo Pro carries a suggested retail price of $149.95.

Starting with one low-compression ball and forgiving driver, LoCo has evolved into Dunlop's flagship product line. The newest addition to the line, which includes an assortment of balls and woods, is the LoCo Irons. The LoCo Irons capitalize on the golf industry's hybrid club trend, while exhibiting the same midnight blue and electric yellow coloring that have become synonymous with the LoCo line.

The LoCo Iron set includes a 6-PW cavity back iron combination and three hybrid utility irons. The utility irons are intended to replace the harder to hit long irons found in traditional sets, and feature deep faces that make it easier for average golfers to get the ball up in the air. The LoCo utility irons also come standard with a Harrison XL 85 Hybrid graphite. The cavity back irons feature stainless steel heads and come standard with True Temper steel shafts in mid-firm flex.
